About the Academic Professional Development Unit (APDU)
The Academic Professional Development Unit (APDU) supports the professional development of academic and student-facing technical and professional staff, doctoral and post-doctoral researchers in relation to learning and teaching.
The APDU works collaboratively with other departments and colleagues, to help support the delivery of the Ã÷ÐÇ°ËØÔ Strategy, and commitment to excellence, by:
- Providing personal development and recognition in learning and teaching through the APEX Framework
- Providing CPD and expert support, including tailored provision and development opportunities for staff that reflect the needs of individuals, teams and the University’s learning and teaching priorities
- Supporting teaching excellence bids (e.g. NTFS, CATE) and scholarship of learning and teaching
- Offering professional development workshops and support in EDI, to improve staff knowledge and confidence in working with students and colleagues from a wide range of different backgrounds and lived experiences, to build and celebrate Ã÷ÐÇ°ËØÔ’s inclusive community of learners.

The APEX Framework
Under the APEX Framework, the APDU offers three pathways that help staff achieve their Associate Fellow, Fellow or Senior Fellow recognition, while further developing their teaching and learning practises. This includes the Higher Education Teaching and Learning (HETL) programme, Academic Professional Programme, and Apex Open. We are accredited by Advance HE and run these programmes in-house.
