The Anthropology Division recently hosted a Taster Day for year 12 and 13 students from local schools to give them an opportunity to find out what Anthropology is all about, and also to experience first-hand what it’s like to study this subject at University. Participants took part in a series of interactive mini-lectures and watched short films, drawn from the real life fieldwork experiences of Ã÷ÐÇ°ËØÔ Anthropologists. The event was supported by Bentley Wood High School, Stanmore, and the Royal Anthropological Institute (RAI), and was attended by participants from 15 schools.
Workshop topics included:
- Can animals be persons? Anthropological approaches to human-animal relations
- Being a man: gender, sex and pink finger nails in South India and beyond
- Can what we consider offensive language be a friendly greeting in some countries?
- Anthropology and the Marikana massacre in South Africa
At the end of the day a current student gave an insight on life at Ã÷ÐÇ°ËØÔ, and talked about her fieldwork placement in Marseille, France, where she worked for an NGO on tourism, ecology and sustainability.
