The Art of Authentic Leadership: Perspectives from Executive Nurse Leaders
A diverse panel of expert nurses from academia and practice consider the power or authentic leadership to spark change and achieve results. This module shares the lived experience of authentic leaders who share their insights on how to motivate teams and maximize impact. This module is designed to learn from experienced academic and executive nurse leaders how holding firm to values for human connections and to be inspired by the power of authenticity, kindness, and vulnerability to do meaningful work can make a difference in the real-life challenges faced in today’s field of higher education. In this module, the intersection of bringing genuine character into the working and learning environment, as vulnerable and imperfect human beings, while staying dedicated to the mission of the organization and values of the nursing profession will be shared by experienced AACN leaders committed to advancing the integration of academia and practice.

Dr. Janie Heath is known for her academic nursing leadership as an educator, researcher, and advanced practice nurse. After a distinguished 46-year career, she retired in 2022 and claims serving as Dean for the University of Kentucky College of Nursing as her highest honor. She has held academic nursing leadership positions at Georgetown University in Washington DC (Coordinator of the Acute Care NP and Clinical Nurse Specialist Program), the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, GA (Associate Dean of Academic and Practice Affairs), and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA (Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs). She earned degrees and post-graduate certificates from the University of Oklahoma, University of South Carolina, George Mason University and Harvard University. Her primary research involves workforce development for resilient and ethical practices and effective interventions with tobacco-dependent populations in acute and primary care settings. Dr. Heath served as a member of the board of directors for the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), founded the Nurses for Tobacco Control National Coalition for Nurse Educators (NTCC), was appointed an inaugural Distinguished Alumni of Nursing at the University of Oklahoma, was selected as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing, was elected the inaugural President of the Kentucky Nurses Action Coalition and received the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Outstanding Advocacy Award. She currently is Chair of the Kentucky Nurses Foundation and serves as Senior VP for Heath Healthcare Consulting INC.

Dr. Jeannette O. Andrews is a national and globally recognized nursing academic nursing leader and scientist, and currently serves as the Dean and Helen Gurley Wolford Professor of Nursing at the University of South Carolina. She has held previous academic leadership positions at the Medical University of South Carolina (Associate Dean for Research and Center Director) and the Medical College of Georgia (Department Chair). Dr. Andrews is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing, a Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Fellow, and an AACN-Wharton Executive Fellow. Dr. Andrews has achieved success as a National Institutes of Health-funded investigator for multiple community trials targeting cardiovascular risk reduction and tobacco control. She has authored over 200 publications and abstracts, and serves as an international/national consultant and contributes to multiple national task groups and organizations related to nursing and health.
Expert: Angela Frederick Amar, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN
Angela Frederick Amar, PhD, RN, ANEF, FAAN, is dean of New York University Rory Meyers College of Nursing and Erline Perkins McGriff Professor of Nursing. Prior to her appointment as dean in August 2023, Dr. Amar was a tenured faculty member at Emory University and Boston College. Most recently, she was the dean of the School of Nursing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. While at UNLV, Dr. Amar’s innovative approach and focus on advancing strategic priorities have led to growth in student enrollment across academic programs, recruitment of quality and diverse faculty and staff, greater financial stability through revenue-generating activities, and increased ranking and stature of the school, faculty, and students. Dr. Amar was named a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2010, a fellow in the Academy of Nursing Education in 2016, and a distinguished fellow in the International Association of Forensic Nursing in 2010. She was in the inaugural cohort of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Nurse Faculty Scholar program (2008-2010) and the AACN Wharton Executive Leadership program. As a leading scholar in gender-based violence, Dr. Amar’s research has influenced the direction of campus policy nationally. Dr. Amar is also a leader in nursing education regarding violence and forensic nursing. She is recognized for her efforts to advance diversity in nursing leadership across organizations and institutions and is a highly sought-after speaker and media guest. Dr. Amar’s work has been widely recognized for the many contributions she has made. This includes the Nursing Leader Award from the Asian American group and the Las Vegas Indian Chamber of Commerce (2022) and the People’s Choice Outstanding Dean and Leader from the Nevada Nurses Association (2021). Her 2016 book on forensic nursing received gold and bronze awards from AJN. The Nursing Network on Violence Against Women International awarded her the Excellence in Practice and Policy award (2015). Dr. Amar currently serves on the board of directors of the American Academy of Nursing, chairs the government affairs committee for the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, and is a member of the finance committee of the National League for Nursing. Dr. Amar holds a Ph.D. from the University at Pennsylvania School of Nursing and a master’s and bachelor’s degrees in nursing from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center.
Expert: Marla De Jong, PhD, RN, CCNS, FAAN
Dr. Marla De Jong is Dean and the Louis H. Peery Presidential Endowed Chair at the University of Utah College of Nursing. As Dean, she oversees undergraduate and graduate nursing programs, an interdisciplinary gerontology graduate program, a $42M portfolio of funded research and scholarship, and several clinical practices. Dr. De Jong is a lifelong leader. Before joining the U, she served nearly 29 years in the United States Air Force, retiring at the rank of Colonel. Her leadership, research, and academic roles included associate dean for research, and professor at the Daniel K. Inouye Graduate School of Nursing at the Uniformed Services University, dean of the US Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, and executive director of the TriService Nursing Research Program. In 2006, Dr. De Jong deployed to Iraq as the program manager for the Joint Theater Trauma System. Dr. De Jong’s work has informed and shaped leadership, research, education, health policy, and military and civilian clinical practice. She has conducted funded research, led within nursing professional organizations, served as editorial board member for several journals, and published more than 55 journal articles. She was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2012. Dr. De Jong earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Grand View College. She received her MS in Nursing, specializing in trauma-critical care, from the University of Maryland at Baltimore, and her PhD in Nursing from the University of Kentucky.
Expert: Jerry Mansfield, PhD, MS, RN, NEA-BC
Dr. Jerry Mansfield has worked in healthcare for more than 35 years, including 26 years in senior nurse executive positions in four major health systems: OhioHealth, The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC), Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) and Mount Carmel Health System. Throughout seven successive inaugural leadership roles in for-profit and non-profit, inpatient and outpatient settings, union and non-union environments, multi-hospital systems and academic medical centers, he has guided improvements in patient and staff outcomes regionally and nationally. Effective February 2024, Jerry now serves as Vice President and System Chief Nursing Executive, University of Texas Medical Branch – Galveston. Jerry graduated with a diploma in nursing from Saint Vincent Hospital School of Nursing (Toledo, Ohio). He received his Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Xavier University (Cincinnati, Ohio). He went on to receive a Master of Science degree in nursing administration, along with a doctorate in public health from The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio). Jerry is a Robert Wood Johnson Executive Nurse Fellow and board-certified Nurse Executive Advanced from the American Nurses Credentialing Center. Jerry serves on two national councils: Board Member-at Large (Practice), the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (Washington DC) and inaugural member, former Co-Chair, the Nurse Executive Council, The Beryl Institute (Nashville, TN). Beginning October 2023, Jerry joined as an inaugural Volunteer Ambassador for the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) Center for Health Equity through Nursing (Washington, DC).
Expert: Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, RN, MS, FACDONA
Dr. Lepaine Sharp-McHenry came to UNMC College of Nursing as the dean in 2023. She previously served as the Dean of the College of Natural, Behavioral, and Health Sciences at Simmons University, the Dean of the College of Nursing at Oklahoma Baptist University, and the Assistant Director of the Eleanor Mann School of Nursing at the University of Arkansas. Prior to her academic leadership roles, she was a faculty member at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Sharp-McHenry’s scholarship has focused on leadership opportunities to advance nursing education through regulation, practice, and education at the state, national, and international level. She completed her Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Arkansas; a Master's of Science with a Major in Nursing with a specialty as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing from the University of Oklahoma; and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice with a specialty in Executive Leadership at Union University.

Usha Menon, PhD, RN, FAAN is Senior Associate Vice President at USF Health, and Dean and Distinguished University Health Professor at the University of South Florida College of Nursing. Usha has built robust connections with community partners to collectively mitigate the nursing shortage in Florida, leading to over $6 million for academic-practice partnerships funding, and a historic legislative budget award of $40 million. College rankings across undergraduate and graduate programs have increased significantly. She recently established two interprofessional primary care practice clinics for the college. Over the 25 years of her research career, she has garnered over $64 million in federal and foundation funding. Dr. Menon is a recognized expert in and engaging speaker on behavior change theory and health equity.
Expert: Mary Lou Sole, PhD, RN, CCNS, FAAN, FCCM
Dr. Mary Lou Sole is Dean and Professor, and the Orlando Health Endowed Chair in Nursing, at the University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Nursing in Orlando, Florida. She is also a Pegasus Professor, the highest honor for UCF faculty members. Dr. Sole has been employed at UCF since 1991 and has held a variety of positions including graduate program coordinator, coordinator of clinical nurse leader and clinical nurse specialist tracks, and interim director. She served as UCF’s interim dean from 2013-2015, and has been in the dean role since 2015. She began her career as a diploma graduate from the Ohio Valley General Hospital School of Nursing in Wheeling, WV. She received a BSN from Ohio University, a master's degree in nursing from The Ohio State University, and a PhD in nursing from the University of Texas at Austin. She is certified as a critical care clinical nurse specialist. She has been active locally and nationally in many professional organizations, including the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She was editor for 8 editions of Introduction to Critical Care Nursing, a best-selling undergraduate textbook. She has just transitioned the text to a new team of editors. Dr. Sole serves on the editorial boards of three critical care journals and reviews for many others. She has also served as a reviewer for NIH study sections. She has published over 100 articles and abstracts in peer-reviewed journals; the majority of articles related to critical care and nursing education. She served as a principal or co-investigator on three NIH-funded research grants. Dr. Sole has received numerous local, state, and national awards for clinical practice, teaching, and research, including the AACN 2010 Distinguished Researcher and the 2013 Researcher of the Year from the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists. She was inducted into the Sigma Theta Tau International Researcher Hall of Fame in 2017. Dr. Sole collaborates regularly with colleagues to develop research ideas, conduct research, and publish results. She loves what she does!
Expert: Cathleen Wheatley, DNP, RN, CENP, FAAN
Dr. Wheatley joined Wake Forest Baptist Health in September 2014 as System Chief Nurse Executive and was named President of the flagship 885-bed academic medical center in April 2019. As President, she is responsible for the overall performance of operations at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center inclusive of Brenner Children’s Hospital and the Comprehensive Cancer Center, and Davie Medical Center. Dr. Wheatley brings disciplined leadership to bear on complex issues where clinical expertise, strategic thinking and organizational savvy are essential. As a leader, she uses experience and insight to provide structure, order, and clarity to enable teams to make rapid and lasting progress on critical issues. Her naturally holistic and global perspective was enhanced when she served as the first Corporate Nurse Executive of Abu Dhabi Health Services Company in the United Arab Emirates, a position she held prior to joining Wake Forest Baptist Health. There, she was responsible for the professional practice and development of more than 9,000 Nursing and Allied Health professionals from over 72 countries. Earlier in her career, she held senior leadership positions at Dekalb Regional Health System in Atlanta, GA, including Senior Vice President, Chief Clinical Operating Officer, Chief Nurse Executive, and Chief Quality Officer. Dr. Wheatley earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Nursing at Georgia State University and her Doctorate in Nursing Practice at the University of Central Florida. She is a Fellow of the prestigious American Academy of Nursing, is board certified with the American Organization of Nurse Leaders as a Certified Executive in Nursing Practice and completed the Nurse Leader Program at the Wharton School of Business. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, N.C. Nurses Association, the American Academy of Nursing, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, American Organization of Nurse Leaders, N.C. Organization of Nurse Leaders, and the American College of Healthcare Executives. Active in professional organizations, Dr. Wheatley has served on the Board of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research (FNINR) and the North Carolina Nurses Association. She is a current member of the HealthLeaders CEO Exchange and the Board of Visitors for the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. Dr. Wheatley’s philanthropic interests include the economic independence of women in developing countries and educational preparatory programs with a global focus. Expert: Ken White, PhD, APRN-BC, FACHE, FAAN
Dr. Ken White serves as Dean Emeritus of the School of Nursing at the MGH Institute of Health Professions in Boston. Prior to joining the IHP, Dr. White served as the Associate Dean for Strategic Partnerships in the School of Nursing and Endowed Professor of Nursing at the University of Virginia (UVA). Previous to his time at UVA, Dr. White served as the Sentara Professor and directed the graduate programs in health administration at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for 20 years. Dr. White holds Emeritus Professor appointments at both VCU and UVA. He has completed visiting professorships at the Luiss Business School in Rome and at the Swiss School of Public Health. He also has completed consultancies in the Republic of Kazakhstan, Guam, Micronesia, and the Republic of Palau. Earlier in his career, Dr. White was an executive with the Mercy Health System, an international provider of health care, where he led the civilian hospital in Guam and served in various administrative roles with Mercy Health Center in Oklahoma City. Dr. White is a Fellow in both the American Academy of Nursing and the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE). From 2021 to 2023, Dr. White served as the President of the American Academy of Nursing. Dr. White has been honored with ACHE’s Gold Medal Award (2019), VCU School of Nursing’s Outstanding Alumnus Award (2021), VCU College of Health Professions Lifetime Service and Achievement Award (2023), and The DAISY Lifetime Achievement Award (2024). Also in 2024, he was named a Luminary Fellow of the Academy of Diversity Nurse Leaders by the National Black Nurses Association. In addition to his academic career, Dr. White is a dedicated nurse practitioner, holding a specialty certification in hospice and palliative care. He worked clinically at UVA Medical Center. Dr. White is also the author of the award-winning book, The Well-Managed Healthcare Organization, 10th edition (2025); as well as Take Charge of Your Healthcare Management Career:50 Lessons that Drive Success (2015), and Boost Your Nursing Leadership Career (2017).

In 2021, Dr. Wood was appointed EVP, Patient Care Operations and System CNO, more recently evolving in support of the organization’s system-level priorities as System Chief Nurse Executive (SCNE).
