Enhanced Lab Infrastructure to Increase Student Support

This session will focus on the current state of student support for laboratory skills acquisition and report on the outcomes of a pilot project at a large Midwestern school of nursing. The pilot school implemented a Mobile Skills Trainer Library at no cost to students and virtually hosted open lab services during the 2021-2022 academic year. The challenges and success of this program will be reviewed. Practical suggestions will be offered for educators seeking to enhance their support services for laboratory students.
Objectives:
- Describe the current knowledge related to best practices in providing laboratory support for skills acquisition.
- Understand the benefits and challenges of the piloted interventions: Virtual Open Lab and a Mobile Skills Trainer Library.
- Describe potential interventions for enhancing lab support within a nursing education setting.

Kristen Munyan, DNP, RN, FNP-BC

Dr. Kristen Munyan is a family nurse practitioner practicing in telehealth management for adults and children with attention and mood disorders in metro-Detroit. Dr. Munyan holds a BSN and MSN-Ed from Oakland University and DNP from Wayne State University. Dr. Munyan's advanced practice clinical experience has included pediatric primary care, pediatric behavioral health in a correctional setting and adult functional assessment. Dr. Munyan has been a nurse educator since 2010, and is interested in interventions to support (English as a Second Language) ESL, at risk and neurodiverse learners. Dr. Munyan is a recent recipient of the AACN Faculty Scholars Grant Program for her work on Enhancing Laboratory Infrastructure to Support At-Risk and ESL Students.
