The EPSRC funded Smart Money project investigates the personal data management, governance, risk and utility challenges concerned with how central banks and other stakeholders such as Other Government Departments (OGDs), financial institutions and citizens can make effective use of Distributed Ledger (DL) enabled Central Bank issued Digital Currencies (CBDCs). Central to this research is a responsible governance framework which uses smart contracts to manage and police access rights to payment transaction metadata and linked data sets held on the DL for all certified and warranted stakeholders.
The project delivers a Smart Money Governance Architecture which covers stakeholders such as the Bank of England, the HM Treasury, OGDs, financial institutions, service providers, businesses and citizens. Using smart contracts, stakeholders will be allowed permissioned access to the transactional data on a ledger.
