Valorisation of construction and demolition waste

Completed

This is a Researcher Links Workshop grant. The aim of this workshop is to gather the most active early career researchers (ECRs) across both the UK and China, discuss the recent advances in the separation & cleaning of C&DW and its high value-added utilization as construction materials for sustainable and resilient infrastructure development. It will be of great importance for the workshop to look into the future technologies, processes and skills that can be applied in a more efficient and effective way in a circular economy approach to achieve sustainable development goals of China and the UK, particularly the design of robust, easily replicable collection and separation methods for recycled C&DW based on supply chain optimisation and life cycle analysis (LCA) for the different processes. Also, of valuable importance will be to discuss the most recent developments in technology for recycling high-value C&DW such as sand, coarse aggregates and concrete to ultimately achieve zero-waste recycling and efficient recovery rates.

To achieve this goal, first, we will invite and involve some active ECRs from industries in China (partner companies) to give industry-focused presentations and participate in discussions with other researchers from academia. This will ensure the technologies discussed in the workshop are feasible and can be applied to industry in a reasonable timescale. Secondly, we have approached a few high profile and inspirational researchers to be the mentors from the UK and China and deliver the keynotes. This will help us attract the best ECRs to attend the workshop and ensure the outputs obtained are up-to-date and advanced. Furthermore, we will facilitate purpose-built sessions on career development of the attending ECRs and long-term collaborations respectively to foster links, realize the outputs achieved in the Workshop and help the ECRs develop themselves in this field.
