Summary
I'm an experienced educator, clinician, coach, inspector and manager in mental health and social care, with more than thirty years working in partnership with individuals, groups, families and communities. I have planned, co-ordinated and delivered teaching, counselling, training and practice development programmes for Universities, the independent sector and NHS Trusts. My clinical, educational and research interests are in self-harm, mindfulness and the arts, empathy, social class, and the impact of trauma. I'm the developer of the Three-Phase Conversational Model of Communication (TPCM), widely used in practice and in Universities.Following a writing sabbatical in Greenland, Canada, the USA and France, I returned to the UK in September, 2017 to work with survivors of, and people bereaved by, the Grenfell Tower fire. I later delivered a national trauma training package I’d designed for Victim Support, and worked with both adult learners at City Lit and medical students at Barts. In March 2019, I started working at Buckinghamshire New University, where I led on a Staff and Student Wellbeing Project and researched and wrote about the impact of fear and the pandemic. I'm a Specialist Advisor in Mental Health and Inspector for the Care Quality Commission. I'm fascinated by the connections between social class and mental health, and between politics, philosophy and ideologies of healthcare. I'm a member of Medact, a part-time poet and short-story writer, a very amateur photographer, and an eternally optimistic Spurs fan.
