Dr Ruoyu Jin
Reader in Construction Management and Technology

Howell Building 204

  • Civil and Environmental Engineering

Summary

Ruoyu Jin has an established research profile on recycled aggregate concrete, circular economy practices in construction & demolition (C&D) waste management, and developing Industry 4.0/5.0-featured digital technologies for C&D waste reuse. In these research areas, Jin has authored over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, two book chapters, editing one book, and two patented innovations in reusing construction wastes as sustainable construction materials (“Recycled Waste Materials Applied in the Prefabricated Enclosure System for Construction Sites”). Jin’s research paper based on the empirical study of C&D waste diversion won the Most Cited Paper Award of Year 2019 in Journal of Resources, Conservation, and Recycling. Another paper that Jin first-authored in the same journal won the Highly Cited Paper in Web of Science, provides the theoretical framework to this project on bridging emerging techniques and C&D waste diversion. As PI or Co-PI, Jin has secured external research funding from various schemes in the past three years by bridging digital transformation and circularity in C&D waste management. Jin is especially experienced and enthusiastic in bridging interdisciplinary research in the area of digital-driven C&D waste management, and in enhancing staff/researcher mobility between UK and overseas institutions through various dissemination platforms (e.g., MOOC and workshop).

The other established research area of Ruoyu Jin is construction safety management. Ruoyu has over ten-year practical and research experience in improving construction safety by engaging digital technologies (e.g., Building Information Modelling (BIM) and immersive technologies) as the early-stage interventions in two main areas: (1): BIM-driven immersive technologies for construction workforce education; (2) digital platform incorporating BIM into immersive virtual reality for pre-construction safety planning embedding new rules in the post-pandemic era. Specifically, Ruoyu focuses on developing and testing an interoperable digital platform by integrating BIM, immersive technologies (e.g., virtual reality), and data analytics to improve workforce safety perception and to inform behavioural reactions, which are important indicators of to prevent accidents. This interdisciplinary work has scientific and practical implications by integrating artificial intelligence, construction engineering, and cognitive psychology. Scientifically, the research fills the gaps of data acquisition and interpretation to inform safety training, which is strongly linked to the practical needs of how the industry, in the era of Industry 4.0/5.0, could adopt data-driven smart approach in enhancing safety performance in a more proactive approach.
