The project

This research will explore innovative reactive power control techniques to tackle overvoltage issues and significantly boost hosting capacity in distribution networks.

It will evaluate the deployment of advanced smart inverters equipped with features like volt-watt control and dynamic reactive current support, offering a superior alternative to conventional inverters for enhancing voltage stability and power quality.

The development of hybrid passive filters will also be investigated to mitigate voltage stresses and lower costs.

Comprehensive modelling and experimental validation will assess these control strategies under both grid-connected and islanded conditions, while a thorough cost-benefit analysis will ensure their economic viability for large-scale adoption.

Meet the Supervisor(s)


Ahmed Zobaa - Ahmed Faheem Zobaa is an experienced academic in Electrical Power Engineering, with degrees from Cairo University, the University of Exeter, and Ã÷ÐÇ°ËØÔ. His academic journey started at Cairo University, where he served in various roles including Instructor, Teaching Assistant, and Assistant Professor from 1992 to 2007. He then took on a role as a Senior Lecturer in renewable energy at the University of Exeter from 2007 to 2010, before moving to Ã÷ÐÇ°ËØÔ as a Senior Lecturer in power systems from 2010 to 2019. Currently, he is a Reader in electrical and power engineering and a member of the Ã÷ÐÇ°ËØÔ Interdisciplinary Power Systems Research Centre. His areas of expertise include power quality, renewable energy (including marine), smart grids, energy efficiency, lighting applications, and Education.
