Abstract:
This session looks at the social context in which social workers are working. We will explore ideas about social systems and how they are influenced by anxiety in the system and what this means in terms developing a psychologically-informed approach to organisation. Students will be invited to work in 2/3s looking at their experience of our theme in their practice work, before providing feedback. Followed by Q&A.
Stephen Moss biography
I qualified as a social worker with an MA in Applied Social Studies in 1979, following which I managed a 12 bed therapeutic hostel for Centrepoint, developed and led a combined therapeutic unit and a leaving care unit for adolescents in care for Ealing Social Services; and then set up and managed a community mental health resettlement service in Lambeth. I trained in group work and after a 2 year programme in consulting to individuals and organisations at the Tavistock Clinic I moved into consultancy work full time in 1987. I have advised on and facilitated many strategy and change programmes in public, private and voluntary sectors. I adopt participatory approaches at all levels in organisations and try to bring a psychologically informed, system approach to organisation and team development. Recent work has been involved in developing the capability of commissioners in health and social care systems, towards achieving more integrated approaches. I also have provider experience as a director with a company providing a music and art production approach to developing the wellbeing of people with learning disabilities of mental health conditions, and also am a founder/director of Reve(a)l Productions CIC, developing social theatre in communities. I’m a trustee of two youth-focused charities. I’m from this part of London growing up in Ruislip.
