This research analyses the intensity of election campaigns and the degree to which they deliver electoral payoffs.The research shows that while elections campaigns are generally effective, there is variation both by party and wider the electoral context.
The study, based on British elections going back to 1992, is the most advanced study of campaigning in world. It demonstrates not only the circumstances under which campaigns are most effective, but also how campaign techniques have changed and evolved. It has revealed how parties manage their campaigns, how both members and non-party members are involved, and that despite the technological advances over the last thirty years, that face-to-face contact remains a critical part of any successful election campaign.
